Michigan press conference notes
These were some of the topics Michigan’s head coach touched on during his Monday press conference:
• The Michigan quarterbacks. Harbaugh announced over the weekend that senior Cade McNamara and sophomore J.J. McCarthy are both considered starters. McNamara, who started all 14 games last season, will open Saturday’s contest, while McCarthy will start the next ball game against Hawai’i. Harbaugh said there isn’t a known timetable on when a final decision on who the permanent starter is — or if there even will be one. He said it’s a great thing for the team to have this ‘problem’ of having two quarterbacks the Michigan staff believes can win a championship in Ann Arbor. He also pushed back on there being any motive (transfer portal, etc.) other than doing what’s best for the Michigan team with his decision on the signal-callers.
• Incoming transfer Eyabi Anoma. The former Alabama, Houston and UT Martin EDGE joined the Michigan team 17 days before Saturday’s opener, but it appears he’s acclimated well. Harbaugh said he will “hopefully” play right away, including in the first game. Anoma reportedly had off-field issues at his first two stops, Alabama and Houston, forcing him to leave and play in the FCS, but Harbaugh didn’t speak much to that speculation other than to say his former teammates in high school vouched for him and that everything has been positive so far.
