Michigan football got one of its most impactful stars back this offseason when running back Blake Corum elected to return to his senior season. Corum suffered a torn meniscus and sprained MCL at the tail end of the 2022 season that required December surgery, derailing the stretch run of his season.

Corum is not going through team drills during Michigan’s spring camp, which started on Feb. 20 and runs through the spring game on April 1. However, he is still putting in work with his teammates and going through the strength and conditioning program as his recovery allows.

“He’ll be full go somewhere around the start of June full summer cycle,” head coach Jim Harbaugh told the media on Thursday afternoon. “He’s out there every day. He’s not going through the drills and he’ll give it the time that’s needed to recover and build the strength back and make sure that he’s in a great place.”

The timeline matches the 6-month recovery period that Dr. Jessica Flynn discussed with The Wolverine earlier this offseason. There are no workload concerns as long as there is no post-recovery pain.

“As long as the knee looks healthy and he’s able to make a full recovery, this is an athlete who obviously wants to take his game to the NFL,” Flynn said. “He was about to be in a really, really tough running back class and a really talented running back class. So it’s going to be hard to hold him back, quite frankly. But, [I wouldn’t be] running him into the ground if he’s having pain in that knee or having trouble working back in. I do think that limiting him somewhat and not just being run-heavy specifically with him every game for a whole season might be smart for his future.”

A pair of Michigan transfers ‘working through something’

There are other players dealing with injuries as spring football kicks into high gear, namely a pair of new faces. Center Drake Nugent and offensive tackle Myles Hinton are “working through something” pertaining to offseason surgeries. But every man that is able is making sure some kind of work is put in.

“Every guy that’s not participating in spring ball they’re actively continuing strength and conditioning,” Harbaugh said. “They’re actively fulfilling the protocols that the doctors have for their rehabilitation. I don’t see anybody loafing or taking it easy. They’ve still got the sweat all over the shirt. It is good guys are doing what the experts are telling ’em to do right now.”

Michigan will have next week off before resuming spring practice on March 6 and continuing through April 1. The spring game will be a traditional Maize vs. Blue scrimmage with a draft and teams split up.
