The Michigan Wolverines have a defensive coordinator opening on Sherrone Moore’s staff and it appears one name could be gaining steam in Joe Cullen. Our Chris Balas mentioned rumblings of Cullen’s candidacy on Sunday morning before Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports confirmed later in the day.

“[Kansas City] Chiefs defensive line coach Joe Cullen is considered a candidate for several defensive coordinator jobs, sources say. His name is in the mix with the Seahawks and Commanders, as well as at the University of Michigan,” Jones tweeted.

The Commanders hired a defensive coordinator in Joe Whitt, so that job can be crossed off the list.

Cullen, 56, has over 30 years of coaching experience at both the college and NFL levels. He is currently serving as the defensive line coach with the AFC Champion Chiefs. He was a defensive coordinator with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021 after five years on John Harbaugh’s staff with the Baltimore Ravens as his DL coach (2016-20). Given U-M’s desire for familiarity of the system that has been in place, a coach with Ravens ties makes sense.

We will have to see where it goes, but it could be a busy week for coaching staff news. Keep it locked in here for the latest.

Michigan quote of the day

“They just ask me if the program be run the same and what the staff will look like. I think all those questions will get answered. As far as the program being run in the same if it’s not broken, don’t fix it. There are a lot of things that we do phenomenally here. I want to continue that path. And there will be things that I do a little bit differently that are my way.

“But there’s not gonna be a wholesale change of the culture and the brotherhood that we have because it’s really good. And I’ve been here for six years. Understand what it’s taken to get there. And I’m not gonna mess that up. Bringing the right people to coach our student athletes be a part of our student athletes’ lives and really be their families is the number one goal right now.”
