Former Michigan Wolverines football safety safety Jordan Morant committed to Duke in early May, but wound up backing off his pledge. He’s now found a new home, picking Mississippi State with an announcement on social media.

“Due to some circumstances I will be de committing from Duke and entering the transfer portal,” Morant tweeted when changing course.

He’ll now play in the SEC.

“Hail State,” Morant wrote in his announcement tweet, echoing Mississippi State’s signature tagline.

Mississippi State went 7-6 last year and appeared in the Liberty Bowl, where it fell to Texas Tech, 34-7. The Bulldogs are entering their third season under head coach Mike Leach, who has an 11-13 record with the school.

Morant did not see game action during his freshman year in 2020, before playing in eight games in 2021. Morant mostly played special teams but got in at safety in one game, totaling eight defensive snaps. He made one tackle in the Wolverines’ 42-27 beatdown of Ohio State.

Morant went through Michigan’s spring practices and made two tackles and one pass breakup in the Maize vs. Blue game, appearing to have climbed the depth chart a bit despite still being buried behind the likes of Rod MooreMakari PaigeR.J. Moten and potentially others, like four-star freshmen Keon Sabb (an early enrollee) and Zeke Berry.

On an appearance on the In The Trenches podcast shortly before Morant left the program, Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh discussed the defensive back and his development this spring.

“Jordan Morant [continues] to have that drive and want to — football being very important, right up there, top three of your priorities,” Harbaugh said. “He’s got the natural athletic ability and toughness. He can hit, not afraid, he could surface to be that type of guy.”

It appears he’ll bring his commitment, attitude and physical traits to the Bulldogs’ program. He has three years of eligibility remaining.

A four-star recruit in the 2020 class, Morant came to Michigan from Bergen Catholic in Oradell, N.J. He suffered a foot injury during his prep senior season and wasn’t able to participate in the Polynesian Bowl and All-American Bowl, both of which he was invited to. That also limited him during his first year at Michigan.

Michigan has lost a total of nine players to the transfer portal since the 2021 season concluded — Morant, quarterback Dan Villari (Syracuse), offensive lineman Chuck Filiaga (Minnesota), cornerback Darion Green-Warren (Nevada), defensive back Sammy Faustin (unknown), cornerback George Johnson (UMass), cornerback Andre Seldon (New Mexico State), linebacker Anthony Solomon (Arizona) and defensive tackle Jack Stewart (UConn).
