Lindy's, Athlon football previews size up Michigan with anonymous scouting reports
Michigan football’s summer has begun, meaning we are just in time for the college national preview magazines to hit the shelves. The program’s fortunes have completely flipped over the last few seasons and it has drawn strong reactions from both the Lindy’s and Athlon preview magazines, now on newsstands.
Both outlets have Michigan projected to win the Big Ten and work its way back to the College Football Playoff. Anonymous sources weighed in on the state of the program and what is expected this upcoming season.
“What an incredible run by the Wolverines,” Lindy’s source said in the magazine. “It’s a shame [Jim] Harbaugh couldn’t get past TCU. A championship is the one thing his resume lacks; it’s hard to envision them having a better path than that. But maybe they would have got stomped by Georgia, too. [Quarterback J.J. McCarthy] flashed enough to show me that he has staying power. Look out for [tight end] Colston Loveland who is primed for a big year. With [Luke] Schoonmaker off to the NFL, that opens the door for him to be more of a focal point; he’s a good one!
“The kid [linebacker Junior] Colson on defense is a ball-hawk; he’s the heart and soul. Everyone should know his story too. He was living in an orphanage in Haiti when an earthquake led him to America … next stop, the NFL.”
What Athlon Sports is saying about Michigan
Athlon had more of the same to say about Michigan but went a little deeper in describing the culture change and current vibe coming out of Ann Arbor.

“Last season really sealed it for them. This is a different program. The gap between them and Ohio State hasn’t been this close in decades. … It’s reload, not rebuild which is something they’ve never been able to claim like an Ohio State or SEC team. The transfers are good, the backfield is great, the QB is great, they’ve got speed on the edges and defensively they’re consistent and smart… It’s proof of concept now, that’s why they’ve stepped it up in recruiting. Jim [Harbaugh] has also found a niche inside the portal. They breed the culture into those guys.
“It’s elitist, but that’s built on confidence, and confident teams are consistent. The only thing they lack right now is that ‘big one win at the national title level. There’s no reason they should’ve lost to TCU, and they definitely know it, but they didn’t do anything crazy in response. And remember, Jim’s a distraction, but not to Jim. At the very top. that’s a calm, consistent culture.”
Both outlets see a Big Ten title on the horizon for the Wolverines for the third season in a row with Athlon predicting a 12-1 (8-1 Big Ten) finish to the regular season.
