The Michigan Wolverines moved to 11-0 on the season with a 31-24 close call at Maryland on Saturday afternoon in College Park. With so much turbulence around the program and a showdown game looming against the Ohio State Buckeyes, this was one it felt like the squad just had to get through.

The Wolverine’s Anthony Broome and Ryan Van Bergen felt that way, too, and that it very much could be the wakeup call that helps them refocus and lock in for the Buckeyes even without head coach Jim Harbaugh on the sideline next Saturday.

”Hopefully it’s a good thing,” Van Bergen said after the win. “There are going to be some things that we talk about that were good and that was not so good. I think we had a little bit of both of those in this game, specifically on the offensive side of the ball. But this was a game that I think some people labeled as a trap game prior to the season kicking off. And I think it was every bit of that. This Maryland team came and played their best game. I think Maryland came prepared and this was their Super Bowl and they played like it and we played like it was our Super Bowl at times. And there were times when it looked like it was our first time playing football, to be honest.

“I think this is exactly what we needed going into Ohio State. I think that there has been a non-focus on the football that’s being played with all the other crap surrounding the Michigan program. I think this was a wake-up call and set some alarms off in these guys that, ‘Hey, this better be your best week of practice because you’re not just gonna walk in and beat Ohio State.’

“That’s what we’re all thinking about is the next one already. Glad to get out of there with a win. It’s an away game, noon game right before the biggest game of your entire season. Very easy to let this one fall and it got a little tight, but we came out with a win.”
