Newsstand: Mike Macdonald dishes on bringing David Ojabo to Baltimore Ravens
The Michigan Wolverines’ defense will look different this year thanks to the coaching staff and personnel changes. On the other side of the equation, things will look the same for a pair of former Wolverines getting the chance to reunite at the next level.
The Baltimore Ravens and head coach John Harbaugh cashed in a favor and hired Mike Macdonald back to coordinate the defense. The organization then doubled down and took former U-M EDGE David Ojabo in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Macdonald recently explained what it was like to bring him in and make the phone call that he would be a Raven.
“It’s a great question,” Macdonald said. “I try not to put too much stock or try to [make] too much of a prediction, because it’s up to [executive vice president & general manager] Eric [DeCosta], and you trust the process of how they handle it, and they do such a great job with it. But as it came closer to there [being] a possibility of him coming here, obviously, you can’t help but get excited about it. So, when it all went down and we were able to select him, I was obviously pretty jacked. It was pretty emotional – being able to give him a call; that was cool.”

Ojabo was selected with the No. 45 overall pick, which was a slide compared to where he was projected. This was thanks to a torn Achilles tendon he suffered at Michigan’s pro day during the draft process. Most believe that it will result in a redshirt season for Ojabo before being ready to re-hit the field fully healthy in 2023.
