Michigan football kicked off its spring practices on Feb. 20 and has started to put in the work before a brief layoff next week. There is a lot of intrigue for the team that returns many of its key pieces but has no shortage of questions.

On our Monday night live show, we discussed some of the superlatives heading into camp, including:

– The player with most to gain

– The player with the most to prove

– Most impactful new player (freshman or transfer)

– Most intriguing storyline

Much of the intrigue revolves around the new pieces and the players that could step up into larger roles. For example, Anthony Broome, Chris Balas and Clayton Sayfie discussed the player with the most to gain during the spring football sessions.

“One is [sophomore defensive tackle] Kenneth Grant,” Sayfie said. “I think he can really solidify himself as a monster in the middle of the defense. On the offensive side, [sophomore wide receiver] Darrius Clemons with some outside receiver snaps up for grabs. He has a lot to gain. He could be a starter by the time fall camp comes around. He’s got that opportunity and I think he has the skillset. Both of these guys have the skillset to seize those opportunities.

Balas said: “I think [sophomore] Amorion Walker at cornerback since he is starting out there. Ronnie Bell called him an alien and said that he is the guy he wants to see at receiver. Well, maybe we will see him play a little bit both ways, but I think Steve Clinkscale thinks he can be a really good cornerback. If you can have a guy over there on that side with that athleticism on the other side of Will Johnson, you’re going to be shutting down a lot of passing games, especially with the safeties that you have coming back.”
