Reflecting on Michigan football's national championship

The Michigan Wolverines are national champions! It is still a sentence that a lot of people are getting used to saying as the reality sets in that U-M is back on the mountaintop of college football.

It was a long and arduous road headlined by a ton of peaks and valleys, but nine years after Jim Harbaugh arrived in Ann Arbor, Michigan has won it all. Joining Anthony Broome on a special edition of The Wolverine Podcast is Chris Castellani of Barstool Sports and Luke Ghiardi, formerly of SB Nation’s Maize n Brew. The three worked and hosted a podcast together at MnB from 2018-21 and reunited to discuss their experiences discussing the team together, what Monday night’s title experience was like and more.

“I knew they were a better team than Washington,” Castellani said. “We are predisposed to the idea that the rug will be pulled out from under us at some point. The game got ugly for a minute just in the sense that the offense wasn’t moving the ball. They gave Washington a lot of chances. Every single time this season, where this team had a chance to go sideways, they just never did.

“This is one of the mentally toughest teams I’ve ever seen. I mean, with all the distractions, all the things that went down going into the Penn State game with your coach getting suspended while he’s on the tarmac. Sherrone Moore takes over and you win the Ohio State game without Harbaugh. In the Alabama game, they were done. Fourth and two and they had 70 yards to go, drove right down the field, tied it, ended up winning in overtime.

Really what it came down to, there were a million different emotions. I mean, so many positive emotions and even some bittersweet ones. The one big takeaway is that now that they’ve got it done and now that they’ve done it the way that they did, this will go down as one of the great defenses in college football history. I think in five years, we’re gonna look at this Michigan defense the way that we look at LSU’s offense in 2019 where we’re like, ‘Dude. This many guys made it to the NFL.’
