The Michigan Wolverines and the rest of the college football world get to dip their toes back into the transfer portal this week with the spring window opening. The cycle runs from April 16-25 and gives players one last chance to find new schools heading into the late spring and summer months.

Of course, we have seen Michigan utilize this late window plenty over the last few years, whether it be the additions of kickers in James Turner and Dominic Zvada or cornerbacks Josh Wallace and Aamir Hall, to name a few examples. Typically, it has been a fruitful time to round out the roster with some underrated needs coming out of spring ball.

Our Clayton Sayfie discussed Michigan’s portal needs ahead of the cycle, headlined by some vacancies that could be filled on both the offensive line and at wide receiver as Michigan continues its build around Bryce Underwood. Some sneaky spots could use some fortification.

Recruiting and portal insider EJ Holland also looked at the portal, stating that quarterback could be a spot that Michigan looks at. Underwood and Jadyn Davis have been the spring camp’s only healthy signal-callers. Mikey Keene has been working through something, and Davis Warren is still on the mend from a torn ACL suffered in the ReliaQuest Bowl win over Alabama. It is something to keep an eye on.

Below, we will track the developments in the portal live throughout the process, including any players who enter from Michigan, targets that may emerge at positions of need and more.

West Virginia wideout in the portal

This one would be notable given his brother is currently being recruited as a member of the 2026 class.

Northwestern QB enters the portal

Michigan needs another signal-caller for the reasons listed above. A target who could make sense is Northwestern’s Mike Wright, formerly of Vanderbilt and Mississippi State. He has been primarily a reserve in his career and would have one season of eligibility remaining.

Sam Houston State OT Orion Irving enters

Any tackle that enters is going to be worth mentioning here. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

An early target at offensive tackle

South Carolina offensive tackle Joe Cotton officially entered the portal on Wednesday morning with early interest from the Wolverines. At 6-foot-7, 315 pounds, Cotton is a true tackle who earned Missouri Valley All-Conference honors last season. He was also an FCS Freshman All-American in 2023.
