Michigan Wolverines offensive coordinator/offensive line Sherrone Moore did not win the 2023 Broyles Award, given to the nation’s top assistant coach. Iowa defensive coordinator Phil Parker was announced as the victor in Tuesday’s ceremony from Little Rock, Arkansas.

Moore was one of the finalists for the award along with Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, LSU offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock, Oregon offensive coordinator Will Stein and Parker. Parker’s Iowa defense held U-M to a Harbaugh era-worst 213 total yards of offense and 3.3 yards per play in a 26-0 Michigan win on Saturday in Indianapolis.

Michigan had a recent previous winner in former offensive coordinator Josh Gattis (2021). Moore’s candidacy was bolstered by serving as Michigan’s acting head coach in four games this season while Jim Harbaugh was suspended. His success included a pair of top-10 wins over Penn State and Ohio State.

Harbaugh raved about what Moore has brought to the table this season following the team’s 30-24 victory over the Buckeyes, which clinched a trip to the program’s third-straight Big Ten Championship game and win.

“The relationships he has with the players with the other coaches,” Harbaugh said in a post-Ohio State press conference last week. “It’s one of the toughest and most important jobs of a coach, (and) of a leader. Maybe the toughest part of the job. Having order and discipline while still having great relationships comes from trust. I trust him because he’s the most trustworthy guy. One of the most trustworthy guys I know, I mean, like a brother, and he believes in the players. He’s somebody that has played the game and had to do a job. We have to be brave and players trust him. I knew when he came into the situation that he was the guy to empower. To make those calls when the chips are on the line because I knew I knew he would trust the guys.”
