Sherrone Moore reveals what he wants in Michigan's next offensive coordinator
The Michigan Wolverines are in the market for a new offensive coordinator after head coach Sherrone Moore dismissed Kirk Campbell earlier this week, which he felt was a necessity coming off of a 7-5 season that saw U-M put up poor showings in a number of categories.
It wound up being a dud of a season on that side of the ball with the Wolverines finishing 128th out of 133 teams in total offense at 294.2 yards per game, 130th in passing yards (113.6 ypg), 70th in rushing yards (160.7 ypg) and tied for 114th in points per game (22.3).
Michigan is in line for an influx of talent in 2025 and beyond, headlined by the signing of Five-Star+ quarterback Bryce Underwood. Balance and explosiveness are traits that Moore wants his offenses to possess moving forward.

“Unfortunately had to make a change and thought that was the best direction we had to go,” Moore said during his Wednesday press conference. “But offensively, I want to be explosive in the run and the pass and balanced. That’s as much as I’ll give you right now. Going through that process of candidates and we’ll find the best one that fits us and fits this program that wants to be at Michigan.
“Obviously they’ll have a lot of tools at hand to use. So, you know, we’re excited for this journey.”
He would later add: “After the [win over Ohio State], I took some time in here by myself and sat back and thought about just where we are as an offense, where we are as a program, and what we need to do, and just felt like it was the best move for us.”
Moore did not share an exact timetable on when Michigan might make a hire, nor did he rule out or confirm further changes to his staff. With signing day in the rearview mirror and a few weeks to go until a bowl game, he wants to be deliberate.
“I’m going to take my time,” Moore said. “I’ll be in communication with our staff and players. What that looks like and when that looks like. I’ve already started that process. I don’t have an exact timetable. I want to do it as soon as possible, but I want to be very thorough with it. So I’m taking my time day and night to do everything I can to get that process done.

“And then as far as other staff changes, we’ll see as we go.”
Underwood’s presence should make Michigan a coveted place to be, and Moore wants his next play-caller to be someone who has a track record of developing young quarterbacks.
“We want to be a balanced team,” Moore said. “We’ve still got to be able to run the football, that’s got to be a thing to do. But someone that’s going to develop the quarterback at a high rate and put them in a great position. Obviously, we’ve got to be able to teach a young guy, whether he starts day one, week two, year two, whatever it is. When you’ve got to develop them, you’ve got to see the progress. As far as what the offense will look like, that’ll take shape as we go.”
So will Michigan swing for experience? Will it go with scheme? Would it consider current or former head coaches across college football? Everything is on the table as the search kicks into high gear.
“There are guys that are both,” Moore said of youth and experience. “There are guys that have done it. There are guys that have been head coaches. There are guys that have been coordinators. Ther are guys that are coordinators now that haven’t done it as long.
“So there’s a vast mix of a group of guys. So, we’ll just keep chopping away and trying to find the best guy.”
