Michigan football officially hires Chip Lindsey as offensive coordinator/QBs coach
The Michigan Wolverines have officially announced Chip Lindsey as its new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, replacing Kirk Campbell in the role.
Lindsey comes over from North Carolina after two seasons under Mack Brown at Chapel Hill. Over the last two years, UNC finished 7th and 37th in total offense, respectively, and did it in different ways.
Last season, it came in the form of having an elite NFL Draft prospect in Drake Maye, who finished the season throwing for 3,608 yards with 24 touchdowns and 9 interceptions en route to becoming the No. 3 overall pick of the New England Patriots.
This year, the player that North Carolina ran its offense through was a running back. Junior Omarion Hampton ran for 1,660 yards – second in the FBS – and 15 touchdowns one season after going for 1,504 and 15 scores.
“Coach Lindsey is an innovative offensive mind who likes to run and pass the ball with great efficiency and balance,” Moore said in a release. “After spending a considerable amount of time together, I knew that Chip was the right fit to coordinate our offense. We share the same philosophy regarding structure, scheme and player development, and I know his leadership of the offense will place our players in the best position to succeed. We are excited to have Chip, Cecily and their children join our University of Michigan and Michigan Football family.”

“I am excited to join Coach Moore’s staff at the University of Michigan,” said Lindsey. “We share the same vision for offensive football and Coach Moore has assembled an outstanding staff that is aligned in its objectives to help our players succeed. I look forward to leading and serving the young men in this program while helping them achieve their goals on and off the football field. My family and I are excited to join the Michigan family. Go Blue!”
Michigan wants to be more explosive and creative in the passing game, and TruMedia has UNC as the 18th-best team in the country over the last two years in explosive play rate under Lindsey’s leadership. Prior to his time at North Carolina, he oversaw offenses that averaged at least 30 points per game in 8 of 11 seasons.
Lindsey has over 10 years of playcalling experience in addition to coaching quarterbacks. He cut his teeth in the high school ranks before coaching the QBs at Troy in 2010 before heading to Spain Park HS as its head coach in 2011-12, then joining Auburn as an offensive analyst in 2013. From there, he spent two seasons at Southern Miss as its OC and QBs coach in 2014-15, where he worked under now-Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken.
Lindsey then moved to Arizona State in the same role in 2016 before moved back to Auburn to be its OC/QBs coach in 2017-18, where he worked with future NFL QB Jarrett Stidham and under head coach Gus Malzahn. He wound up back at Troy as its head coach from 2019-21, where he went 15-19 in three seasons before heading to UCF in 2022 as its OC/QBs coach, his second stint working with Malzahn prior to the last two years at UNC.
