Wolverine TV podcast: Postgame reactions to win over Rutgers
The Michigan Wolverines moved to 4-0 on the season with a 31-7 win over Rutgers on Saturday in Ann Arbor in the first game Jim Harbaugh was back on the sideline. It came just in time for the Big Ten opener, and one that was a bit of a slog early before opening up.
TheWolverine.com’s Anthony Broome and former Michigan defensive lineman Ryan Van Bergen broke down the game after it was all said and done. Van Bergen was to see a job well done in a conference opener.
“I think we saw three quarters of really good football,” Van Bergen said. “The first quarter we got a little bit of a slow start and probably had some concerned Michigan alums and fans as you start that game and give up an explosive play, which we haven’t seen this defense give up yet. But all in all, a really good sound performance, definitely some things that you want to see improve and some things you want to clean up to play some of the top-quality opponents here in the Big Ten. But to have our Big Ten opener and play this well and play this well through three quarters… a good performance, solid performance for Michigan.
“And I think Rutgers deserves a whole lot of credit. They came in and they punched us in the mouth to get the game going. And I think that they probably weren’t expecting that. That kind of flipped the switch for the Michigan guys and they started playing better football. The first two series, both the first offensive and first defensive series, I thought both were pretty poor for both units.

“That wasn’t the trend of the game. They got it turned around and they played a full football game after that. And I agree with getting the starters out there for the remainder of the game and playing what feels like real football. That word that we kept using…the preseason, the preseason’s over.”
