Michigan football moved to 6-0 on the season with a 31-10 win at Indiana on Saturday afternoon. Despite the big win and strong start to the season, ESPN’s Football Power Index is a bit down on the Wolverines.

Michigan now ranks 5th in the country, which matches the AP Poll put out on Sunday afternoon. Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia and Texas are the only teams ranked above the Wolverines in the ESPN metric. FPI has Michigan finishing with a 10.8-1.4 record on the season. Due to Ohio State’s performance, some of the Big Ten title odds took a tumble this week.

So what exactly is FPI?

“FPI is a predictive rating system designed to measure team strength and project performance going forward,” ESPN explains. “The ultimate goal of FPI is not to rank teams 1 through 128; rather, it is to correctly predict games and season outcomes. If Vegas ever published the power rankings it uses to set its lines, they would likely look quite a lot like FPI.”

Other FPI percentages on Michigan’s resume include:

Win Out: 9.1%

Six Wins or More: 100%

Win Big Ten East: 21.9%

Win Big Ten: 17.3%

College Football Playoff: 37.9%

Make National Title Game: 14.7%

Win National Title: 5.6%

Each week, we will update Michigan’s resume and also take a look ahead to the rest of the 2022 schedule. Here is how it breaks down ahead of Week 7.

Bowl projections and what’s next

ESPN also put out its latest batch of bowl projections with both Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schlabach predicting a Rose Bowl appearance for Michigan against the USC Trojans. It has mostly looked this way all season long.

Michigan’s game with Penn State kicks off at 12 p.m. ET on Saturday afternoon with the broadcast set for FOX’s Big Noon Saturday coverage. It will be the 4th-consecutive game that the Wolverines play in the noon slot on the FOX broadcast. Gus Johnson, Joel Klatt and Jenny Taft will once again be on the television call.
