Star running back Blake Corum announced on The Rich Eisen Show Monday that he will return to Michigan for his senior season in 2023. Corum is passing on the opportunity to enter the 2023 NFL Draft, where he could have been a potential day-two selection to return to Michigan next season.

This is a massive get for the Wolverines, who will return one of the best players in college football to a team that already has national title aspirations for 2023. It also helps Michigan’s depth chart at running back, which would have been a major question mark and a likely transfer portal need this offseason.

Corum, who basically missed the final 3.5 games with a knee injury, finished the year 1,463 yards and 18 touchdowns. He underwent surgery before the Big Ten Championship game and has been rehabbing in Los Angeles over the last few weeks. Coming into decision time, Corum had previously stated he was 50/50 on returning to Ann Arbor or declaring for the draft. NIL played a factor in the decision. In an attempt to sway Corum and his teammates to stay, the Valant Management Group set up a “one more year fund” for fans and donors to sweeten the pot for players to opt in for another season.

Corum’s return gives Michigan another season of the 1-2 punch in the backfield with Donovan Edwards. It is another known commodity and weapon for quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who emerged as a star for the Wolverines down the stretch. There will be some questions at wide receiver but is very little this offense lacks now with the return of Corum. Some can argue it makes Michigan one of the country’s top 2 or 3 teams in the rankings ahead of next season.

We will have to wait and see what happens with the decisions of the other Michigan football players. The deadline to declare for the 2023 NFL Draft is January 16th, so we should be getting some more movement soon.
