Wolverine TV: Reacting to the first College Football Playoff rankings
Michigan football was ranked 5th in the first College Football Playoff rankings released on Tuesday evening. These are the ones that count, and the CFP committee made it clear that the Wolverines still have work to do.
Ranked first was Tennessee, followed by Ohio State, Georgia and Clemson. Michigan, Alabama, TCU, Oregon, USC and LSU round out the top 10.
The committee likes Michigan’s workmanlike resume to this point, but is not a fan of the team’s strength of schedule at the moment. The historically light non-conference has long been a talking point, but they also do not have a road win over a team that is over .500. It won’t have a chance at one until they play Ohio State.
“What’s the knock against Michigan?” CBS Sports’ reaction said. “The easy schedule that includes out-of-conference wins over Colorado State, Hawai’i and UConn? OK, but it has rolled through that slate with relative ease. It’s important that teams don’t play down to their competition, and the only one-score game the Wolverines have played is the 34-27 win over Maryland on Sept. 24. Oh, and it has a much better win than Clemson, too. The Wolverines dominated No. 15 Penn State 41-17 on Oct. 15, which is far more impressive than anything that Clemson has done.
“In the end, it won’t matter. Michigan has games against No. 15 Illinois and No. 2 Ohio State to close out the regular season, which will truly tell the tale on just how good Jim Harbaugh’s team really is.”
The Wolverine’s Anthony Broome discusses the initial field released and where Michigan stands among the national elite.
