There’s much anticipation heading into the Michigan Wolverines football season, and TheWolverine.com is counting down the days until the Sept. 2 opener against East Carolina. We’ll discuss current Michigan events, the upcoming season and/or take a look at a significant number that correlates with how many days remain until kickoff, whether it be a player’s jersey number, a year, a date, a score, etc.

With 34 days to go until Michigan kicks off the 2023 season, we remember an up-and-down college career for former Michigan Wolverine Justin Fargas, who found his most success after he played in Ann Arbor.

Fargas decided to join Michigan and play for the Wolverines in 1998. His college career, however, was marred by a series of unfortunate injuries that hindered his progress. He rushed for 362 yards in two healthy seasons with the Wolverines. In 2002, Fargas transferred to USC to join the Trojans football program, a move that would ultimately set the stage for a career turnaround.

At USC, Fargas found the fresh start he needed. He rushed for 715 yards and seven touchdowns, and that was enough to catch the attention of NFL scouts and put him on draft radars. The Oakland Raiders made him a third-round selection in the 2003 NFL Draft.

In 2007, Fargas had a breakout season that showcased his true potential as an NFL running back. He rushed for over 1,000 yards, solidifying his position as the lead back for the Raiders. Fargas’ bruising running style and ability to break tackles earned him the admiration of fans and respect from his peers.
