Eighteen members of the Michigan Wolverines football freshman class have seen game action through two games. The Maize and Blue have emptied the bench in wins over Colorado State (51-7) and Hawai’i (56-10) and are favored by 47.5 points over UConn to wrap up the non-conference portion of the schedule this weekend.

Thirteen Michigan freshmen have seen action in both contests, while five others have played in just one. It’s important to note that athletes can play in up to four games while still retaining their redshirt. If they surpass the five-game threshold, this season will count against their eligibility. For reference, Michigan played six freshmen in more than four games last season.

Eight primarily offensive freshmen are in that group, while the other 10 are mainly defensive players. Amorion Walker has seen tie on both ends of the ball, at both wide receiver, his primary position, and defensive back.

With it being a 23-member class, that leaves just five who haven’t played yet — defensive backs Zeke Berry and Damani Dent, offensive linemen Alessandro Lorenzetti and Andrew Gentry and quarterback Jayden Denegal.

The 2022 class that was ranked No. 9 in the country per the On3 Consensus was led by defensive back Will Johnson. In the early going, he’s played the most snaps out of the group (57). According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), he’s the second-best cornerback in man coverage this season. Overall, he’s given up 4 receptions for 47 yards and 1 touchdown on 8 targets.

Five out of the top six Michigan freshmen in terms of snaps played are on the defensive side of the ball. Defensive tackle Mason Graham is in the regular rotation and has made 2 tackles, including a half-stop for loss, and 1 pass breakup.

The offensive player with the most snaps is wideout Darrius Clemons. The player who has made the biggest impact on that side of the ball, though, is running back CJ Stokes. He’s rushed 14 times for 96 yards (6.9 yards per carry) with 1 touchdown.
