Michigan Wolverines quarterback J.J. McCarthy (9) celebrates after a touchdown against the Michigan State Spartans during second-half action at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023.

The second installment of the College Football Playoff rankings are out with the Michigan Wolverines remaining at No. 3. Ohio State, Georgia, Michigan and Florida State comprise the top four with Washington and Oregon set as the first two out, just like the previous week.

Given the allegations surrounding the Michigan football program over an illegal sign-stealing/scouting operation, some had wondered how the committee would respond in their second ranking. Harbaugh and Michigan are focused on taking care of their business on the field.

Michigan is currently 9-0 on the season and coming off a 41-13 blowout of Purdue. Its games the rest of the way include a Saturday matchup at Penn State with a road trip to Maryland to follow. The regular season comes to a close against Ohio State on Nov. 25 in Ann Arbor … should the Wolverines win the Big Ten East, the conference title game will take place on Dec. 2 in Indianapolis.

Committee chair Boo Corrigan said the Wolverines will stay in the rankings based on what they do on the field.

“Once again, and not to be repetitive in this, our mission as a committee is to judge the teams that are eligible for postseason,” Corrigan said after the CFP reveal show. “Until something changes in that, we’re going to continue to follow that track and make sure that we’re following the protocols. Again, this is not a CFP selection committee issue.”

Games against Penn State and Ohio State are essentially playoff games for Michigan and will weigh heavily on how the committee sees them moving forward given what has largely been a light schedule. Head coach Jim Harbaugh seemed in a good mood Saturday and said his enthusiasm hasn’t waned.

“It’s always been high. I love the competition,” he said. “At least I thought it was high. I’ll tell you this, just these players, how they’ve been raised, their families, there’s definitely a boost, an invigoration, just being around those guys. You know all the names. J.J. and Dono and Blake, Aidan Hutchinson. Just so many that … I’ve told them the same thing. It’s given me a huge boost.”

Here are the full rankings released by the committee on Tuesday night.
