Michigan press conference notes

Here are some of the topics that were discussed at Schembechler Hall today:

• Newsome discussed Michigan’s top two tight ends, senior Erick All and graduate Luke Schoonmaker, and said that they could be the best two players at their position in the nation. That’s certainly the goal, revealed by head coach Jim Harbaugh at Big Ten Media Days. They’re competing against each other and making each other better during fall camp, which the Wolverines hope will translate to fall Saturdays. Newsome also discussed his path as a coach and how much he’s enjoying being a part of the U-M staff.

• Bellamy talked about graduate wide receiver Ronnie Bell and what he has brought during U-M’s fall camp. Bell was injured last season (ACL in the season opener against Western Michigan), but is back healthy now and continues to lead. A returning captain last season, Bell’s presence has boosted the entire room. Bellamy also compared Michigan sophomore wideout Andrel Anthony to one of the program’s best ever at the position — Braylon Edwards. He described why, with a lot of it having to do with their playing styles. It’s obviously high praise for a player who hasn’t had a major impact just yet, but the ceiling appears to be high for the East Lansing, Mich., native.
