Michigan's roster numbers: Where Wolverines stand at each position, overall heading into winter
The Michigan Wolverines are heading into an offseason with plenty of changes already underway, whether it be an influx of new talent via high school and the transfer portal or a move for a new offensive coordinator.
But next season also comes with a trimmed roster down to 105 total players, there has been a lot of maneuvering needed. Revenue sharing is coming to college sports next season, leaving teams and departments to cut back on the amount of opportunities afforded.
Accounting for transfers out, in addition to graduates with eligibility remaining, here is a look at where Michigan stands in the first full week of January. The roster does not have to be set and official until the start of the 2025-26 school year.
MICHIGAN CURRENT UNOFFICIAL ROSTER TOTAL: 106 (105 limit)
Quarterbacks (5)
• Graduate Mikey Keene
• Graduate Davis Warren
• Sophomore Jadyn Davis
• Freshman Bryce Underwood
• Freshman Chase Herbstreit
Analysis: Michigan’s quarterback room is headlined by the signing of Underwood, the nation’s No. 1 overall recruit, and Keene, a former Fresno State signal-caller with over 8,000 yards and 65 touchdowns in his career. Warren tore his ACL in the bowl game, so it will be interesting to see if the movement at quarterback is done this offseason.
Running backs (6)
• Junior Justice Haynes
• Junior Benjamin Hall
• Sophomore Jordan Marshall
• Sophomore Micah Ka’apana
• Freshman Jasper Parker
• Freshman Donovan Johnson
Analysis: Haynes is the big ticket addition of the offseason and could form a 1-2 punch with Marshall, the ReliaQuest Bowl MVP and a former top-100 recruit, next season in Ann Arbor.
Wide receivers (13)
• Graduate Peyton O’Leary
• Graduate Donoven McCulley
• Graduate Joe Taylor
• Graduate C.J. Charleston
• Senior Amorion Walker
• Junior Fredrick Moore
• Junior Semaj Morgan
• Junior Kendrick Bell
• Sophomore Channing Goodwin
• Sophomore I’Marion Stewart
• Freshman Andrew Marsh
• Freshman Jamar Browder
• Freshman Jacob Washington
Analysis: Michigan seems dead set on adding at least one more wide receiver via the transfer portal, so it will be interesting to see how this affects spring ball and potential movement out the door. So far, McCulley has been the only addition via the transfer portal.
Tight end (8)
• Graduate Max Bredeson
• Senior Marlin Klein
• Junior Deakon Tonielli
• Junior Zack Marshall
• Junior Jalen Hoffman
• Sophomore Brady Prieskorn
• Sophomore Hogan Hansen
• Freshman Eli Owens
Analysis: Bredeson has yet to announce a final decision on staying or going in 2025, but we leave him accounted for here. Michigan kicked the tires on adding Max Klare in the portal before he went to Ohio State, and could be making a push for Nebraska’s Thomas Fidone.
Offensive tackle (8)
• Graduate Jeffrey Persi
• Senior Connor Jones
• Junior Evan Link
• Sophomore Andrew Sprague
• Sophomore Ben Roebuck
• Sophomore Blake Frazier
• Sophomore Brady Norton
• Freshman Andrew Babalola
Analysis: Michigan started Sprague and Link in the bowl game, so that could be the look when spring ball opens up. Norton, a transfer from Cal Poly, and Babalola, a five-star signee and early enrollee, could be intriguing names to keep an eye on.
Interior offensive line (9)
• Graduate Lawrence Hatter
• Graduate Greg Crippen
• Graduate Giovanni El-Hadi
• Junior Nathan Efobi
• Junior Brooks Bahr
• Sophomore Luke Hamilton
• Sophomore Jake Guarnera
• Freshman Avery Gach
• Freshman Kaden Strayhorn
Analysis: Crippen is returning in 2025, and we are still awaiting official word from El-Hadi. Michigan added an experienced mauler in Hatter, who is transferring up from D-2 Ferris State.
EDGE (11)
• Graduate Tyler McLaurin
• Graduate TJ Guy
• Graduate Kechaun Bennett
• Senior Derrick Moore
• Junior Cameron Brandt
• Junior Aymeric Koumba
• Sophomore Devon Baxter
• Sophomore Dominic Nichols
• Sophomore Lugard Edokpayi
• Freshman Nate Marshall
• Freshman Julius Holly

Analysis: Guy and Moore have said they are planning on returning, which is a major boost to Michigan’s pass rush. Brandt also emerged this year as a promising contributor, and the group of sophomores here all have a chance to pop with another offseason of gains.
Defensive tackle (13)
• Graduate Tre Williams
• Graduate Ike Iwunnah
• Graduate Rayshaun Benny
• Graduate Damon Payne
• Senior Alessandro Lorenzetti
• Junior Enow Etta
• Junior Trey Pierce
• Sophomore Deyvid Palepale
• Sophomore Manuel Biegel
• Sophomore Ted Hammond
• Freshman Travis Moten
• Freshman Bobby Kanka
• Freshman Benny Patterson
Analysis: Michigan fortified its depth with the additions of Williams and Payne from Clemson and Alabama, respectively. All efforts now are on getting Benny back for a fifth season in Ann Arbor. He was non-committal during bowl season, saying he had not made a decision on his future yet.
Linebacker (10)
• Graduate Jaydon Hood
• Senior Jaishawn Barham
• Senior Ernest Hausmann
• Senior Jimmy Rolder
• Junior Jason Hewlett
• Junior Troy Bowles
• Sophomore Cole Sullivan
• Sophomore Zach Ludwig
• Freshman Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng
• Freshman Chase Taylor
Analysis: Buzz from the offseason so far has suggested that Barham could move to EDGE, but we keep him in this group for now. Hausmann is returning next year, and Rolder could be in for an expanded role. Depth here was addressed by adding Bowles from Georgia.
Cornerback (9)
• Graduate Ja’Den McBurrows
• Graduate Ricky Johnson
• Junior Jyaire Hill
• Sophomore Jo’Ziah Edmond
• Sophomore Jeremiah Lowe
• Sophomore Tevis Metcalf
• Freshman Shamari Earls
• Freshman Elijah Dotson
• Freshman Jayden Sanders
Analysis: One of Michigan’s biggest lingering transfer portal needs is still at corner. Hill is a projected starter next season, and Earls and Edmond could push for time on the other side. A plug-and-play starter would be ideal, though.
Safety (9)
• Graduate Rod Moore
• Senior Jaden Mangham
• Senior Zeke Berry
• Junior T.J. Metcalf
• Junior Brandyn Hillman
• Sophomore Jacob Oden
• Sophomore Mason Curtis
• Freshman Kainoa Winston
• Freshman Jordan Young
Analysis: All signs point to a return to Michigan for Moore, who dealt with a torn ACL this year. Getting him back at full strength would significantly raise the ceiling of the back end.
Special teams (5)
• Senior kicker Dominic Zvada
• Senior punter Hudson Hollenbeck
• Graduate long snapper Greg Tarr
• Senior long snapper Evan Boutorwick
• Senior long snapper James Kavouklis
Analysis: Michigan lost punter Tommy Doman to the portal, but Hollenbeck performed well in the bowl game. It still would not be a surprise to see them go after a punter.
