Michigan football sophomore defensive back Damani Dent has entered the transfer portal, according to On3’s Matt Zenitz. Dent will have four years of eligibility remaining after a redshirt season with the Wolverines last fall.

He was a three-star prospect in the 2022 class by the On3 Industry Rankings. Dent was also ranked as the No. 688 overall player and the No. 61 safety in his cycle coming out of Terry Parker HS in Jacksonville, Florida. Dent was recruited to Michigan by former linebackers coach George Helow and current defensive backs coach/co-defensive coordinator Steve Clinkscale.

Dent played snaps at cornerback, safety and wide receiver in high school and led his team with 63 tackles during his senior season at Terry Parker. He also had four interceptions and eight passes defended. He had plenty of fans on the Michigan coaching staff, but none bigger than the man in charge.

“Damani Dent, he’s a guy I’ve really gotten so close to in the class,” head coach Jim Harbaugh told Jon Jansen on the In the Trenches podcast last year. “There are guys you talk to everyday — they text me or I text them every day. Damani has certainly been like that … great personality. That’s Damani Dent. It’s kind of like looking in the mirror — the enthusiasm, the love of football. He just really, really stands out to me that way.”

Dent is the second member of the safety position group to enter the transfer portal this week, joining senior RJ Moten. Michigan’s top two options on the depth chart are junior Rod Moore and senior Makari Paige with sophomores Zeke Berry and Keon Sabb and graduate Quinten Johnson filling out the rotation. Dent was not expected to move into a role on the two-deep depth chart this season.
