The Michigan Wolverines football program posted a new general manager position this week and has found their man. Sources confirm to TheWolverine.com that head coach Sherrone Moore will bring in Sean Magee as the team’s GM.

Magee has been the Chicago Bears’ Chief of Staff since May 2022, which saw him serve as a liaison between the head coach, GM and player ops within the organization. Prior to his time with the Bears, Magee was with Michigan for five years from 2017-22 in an associate athletic director role for the football program.

College GM positions are considered an up-and-coming gig in the profession with the sport taking on more of a professional feel due to changes over the last number of years with the transfer portal and NIL front. ESPN’s Jordan Reid recently said they could soon be paid as well as coordinators are.

McGee was one of U-M’s key support staffers during his time with the program and the reported hiring has already drawn strong reviews.

“A well-placed source says he had not been with the Chicago Bears for a couple weeks now and was close to taking a job with Oklahoma,” TheWolverine.com’s Clayton Sayfie said on Saturday afternoon. “Now appears he’s headed back to Michigan as GM. Nice get for Sherrone Moore.

“A separate individual, who worked with Magee at Michigan, says he did ‘everything’ behind the scenes during his five years in Ann Arbor.”

The GM position with the football program is expected to be a key figure in taking responsibilities off of Moore, including roster construction and NIL efforts

“The Football General Manager is responsible for directing all aspects of recruiting prospective student-athletes to the University of Michigan Football program,” the U-M job posting wrote. “Additionally, this role will lead Michigan Football’s Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) activities in conjunction with the Athletic Department’s efforts in this area. Reporting directly to the Head Football Coach, this position will adhere to all University of Michigan, Big Ten Conference, and NCAA rules and regulations.”

Moore has been busy putting together his support staff as Michigan transitions out of the Jim Harbaugh era. Harbaugh, who was hired by the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers. While he has a staff to fill out on the entire defensive side of the ball, defensive coordinator Don “Wink” Martindale and Magee are two of his biggest moves thus far as he shapes the program.
