Newsstand: Michigan football sings 'Jolly Good Fellow' after national championship game
Tweets Of The Day
Michigan started a new tradition this season, honoring top players of the game by singing the tune ‘Jolly Good Fellow’ for them in the postgame locker room. After winning the national championship with a 34-13 win over Washington, the entire team earned the jingle.
Michigan sophomore cornerback Will Johnson spoke to fans at the team’s arrival celebration after returning home from Houston and said that the Wolverines will run it back next season.
Michigan junior quarterback J.J. McCarthy was interrupted by fans who were clamoring for him to come back for one more season.
“I just got to say this — I don’t know how I can leave y’all,” McCarthy said. “Everything about this place just made it home for me, and I just love every single one of y’all from the bottom of my heart.
“It’s all about ‘the team, the team, the team’ here, and you guys are included. You guys are the team, so we appreciate you so frickin’ much. Love you guys. Go blue!”
Senior running back Blake Corum showed up to the national championship game in a cowboy hat and left with a title cap.
McCarthy has been a disciple of Cincinnati Bengals and former LSU quarterback Joe Burrow, who led the Tigers to the 2019-20 national championship. Burrow had his famous picture smoking a cigar after beating Clemson, and McCarthy — cowboy hat and all — had a similar cigar smoking photo after taking down Washington.

“Joe all the way,” McCarthy said earlier this season. “He’s been my guy since he got at LSU. When he had that year I knew he was gonna it just proved me right. Joe was definitely my guy then, and now.”
He also has used Burrow’s 2019 season as a bit of a blueprint for how he can play.
“I keep saying week to week that I need to use my legs more and it’s in situations like that,” said after the 2022 Penn State game. “You go back to the 2019 season with Joe Burrow and everything he was able to do with that, and I’m faster than Joe Burrow, so I should be able to do it at a more effective level.”
