Michigan Wolverines football saw head coach Jim Harbaugh depart the program for the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers, the move being made official Wednesday night. The news set social media ablaze, with Harbaugh receiving praise and appreciation, and fans weighing in on what should be next.

The Chargers posted a hype video for Harbaugh’s hiring, featuring plenty of sweet memories from his nine seasons at Michigan.

The Michigan football program put out a farewell to Harbaugh, featuring locker room speeches, victory celebrations and the family’s famous question, “Who’s got it better than us?”

More Harbaugh memories were shown in former Michigan offensive lineman Taylor Lewan‘s video.

Harbaugh was hired by Michigan Dec. 30, 2014, tasked with turning the program around. He did that and then some, culminating on winning the Wolverines’ 12th-ever national championship in 2023.

Here’s more reaction on Harbaugh’s legacy at Michigan:

U-M alum and Barstool Sports president Dave Portnoy shares that he’s “disappointed, but not devastated” that Harbaugh has left U-M.

“Jim Harbaugh has a seat at my table — a Michigan man table — for the rest of his life. You’ve gotta remember. Michigan was awful — awful — when he came back to us. … The world was spinning the wrong way. He put his finger on the globe and stopped it and turned it back in the direction it needed to go, making Michigan the premier football program not only in the Big Ten but in the world — beating Alabama, winning the national title, dominating the Big Ten, making Ohio State our bitch.”

Michigan offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Sherrone Moore is the heavy favorite to replace Harbaugh. It didn’t take long for FOX analyst Joel Klatt and others to point out how the Wolverines would be wise to promote him as soon as possible, especially considering that players now have 30 days to enter the transfer portal following the coach departing.

Moore, of course, has the support of Michigan players, including offensive lineman Zak Zinter, who is headed to the NFL but advocated for his former position coach on social media, saying, “No interviews needed. It’s Papa Moore’s time.”

2024 Michigan linebacker signee Jaden Smith reiterates that he’s locked in with the Wolverines while wishing Harbaugh well in the future. Other signees shared similar sentiments when speaking with TheWolverine.com’s Zach Libby.
