Wolverine TV podcast: Jake Butt reviews Michigan football's spring game
Former Michigan Wolverines tight end Jake Butt, who was on the color commentary call for Big Ten Network, joins the podcast to recap the spring game. Topics include Michigan’s offseason, momentum from year-to-year, spring ball takeaways, Grant Newsome and much more.
Before jumping into a discussion about the spring game, Butt discussed how his opportunity with BTN came about.
“They reached out to me,” Butt said during the podcast. “It had been super fluid in terms of what an opportunity might look like. I have also been talking to other networks. They reached out and asked if I wanted to do color analysis for the spring game. At first, I was like, ‘ah, I don’t know man.’ It’s a skill. Being an analyst is a very hard thing to do. You’ve seen some guys and fail. At the NFL level, you’ve seen guys that have stepped up to bat. I commend them for the courage because it was hard, but it felt really natural to me last week. I’ve still got a lot of room to prove, but I really liked how it sounded. I went back and watched the film and it went really well.”
Tight ends lead the way
Plenty of other pertinent topics came up in recapping the spring game, but Butt did offer his opinion on the tight end group he used to lead. Michigan’s two leaders at the top of the depth chart should shoulder a heavy load in 2022. They could have an argument for best position group on the roster.

“Depth matters, but is going to be led by Erick All and Luke Schoonmaker,” Butt said. “You need two guys, especially in this system. You need two guys, and they are like Swiss army knives. They lined up all over the field. At receiver, in the slot, they lineup at fullback. On the ball, off the ball tight ends. Those guys are the anchors and do everything you could ask for. They will take the lion’s share and take 75-to-80% of the snaps. Then you have guys that can come in and compliment what Erick and Luke do so well.”
