By The Numbers: Stats and facts to know about Michigan football's 2023 recruiting class
Michigan football’s 2023 recruiting class is signed and in the can, giving the program its next wave of contributors and foundational pieces. Head coach Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines inked 23 players to NLIs on Wednesday afternoon.
When the dust cleared and the announcements were over, Michigan’s class ranked 18th in the country thanks to a pair of commitments from four-stars Karmello English and Jyaire Hill. The Wolverines’ haul of talent put them 3rd in the Big Ten in the recruiting rankings behind Ohio State and Penn State, respectively.

Here is a breakdown of some of the most interesting numbers to come out of the early signing period and Michigan’s 2023 class.
Michigan football’s 2023 class by the numbers
23 – Michigan has 23 signees in its 2023 recruiting class — On300 defensive back Jyaire Hill, On300 offensive lineman Nathan Efobi, On300 offensive tackle Evan Link, On300 EDGE Enow Etta, consensus four-star offensive lineman Amir Herring, four-star running back Cole Cabana, four-star linebacker Semaj Bridgeman, four-star tight end Deakon Tonielli, four-star wide receiver Karmello English, three-star wide receivers Semaj Morgan and Fredrick Moore, three-star defensive linemen Brooks Bahr and Roderick Pierce, three-star running back Benjamin Hall, three-star EDGE Aymeric Koumba, three-star tight end Zack Marshall, three-star athletes Kendrick Bell, Breeon Ishmail and Jason Hewlett, three-star defensive backs Cameron Calhoun and D’Juan Waller, three-star linebacker Hayden Moore and three-star kicker Adam Samaha.
0 – Five-star recruits signed for the 2023 class. Cornerback Will Johnson was the lone five-star signee during the 2022 cycle, which made it the only class in the last four (2020, 2021, 2023) to have a five-star prospect in it.
4 – Signees from the state of Ohio in this cycle, all three-star recruits (cornerback Cameron Calhoun, linebacker Jason Hewlett, defensive back D’Juan Waller Jr., athlete Breeon Ishmail). All of them have come since Michigan’s 45-23 win over Ohio State on Nov. 26 in Columbus. Four signees come from the state of Michigan in running back Cole Cabana, offensive lineman Amir Herring, wide receiver Semaj Morgan and kicker Adam Samaha.
6 – Michigan has two signees in this cycle that measure in at 6-foot-6 in four-star offensive tackle Evan Link and three-star defensive lineman Brooks Bahr, making them the two tallest players in the class.
8 – Four-star prospects signed to the 2023 cycle for the Wolverines. Four of them are top-200 players via the On3 Consensus in defensive lineman Enow Etta (No. 119), wide receiver Karmello English (No. 191), cornerback Jyaire Hill (No. 197) and running back Cole Cabana (No. 200). The other four-star signees are linebacker Semaj Bridgeman (No. 283), Link (No. 289), interior offensive lineman Amir Herring (No. 316) and tight end Deakon Tonielli (No. 378).
12 – Different states and countries represented in the 2023 class. Members of the signing haul hail from Ohio (4), Michigan (4), Illinois (4), Missouri (2), Georgia (2), Alabama, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Texas, California, Virginia and France.

119 – Etta is the the highest rated recruit in the class, ranking 119th among all players nationally.
290 – Michigan has 3 signees in the 2023 class that weigh 290 pounds, which makes them the heaviest in the cycle – OT Evan Link, IOL Amir Herring and DT Trey Pierce.
599.7 – The average mileage from home to Ann Arbor for the stateside players making their way to the University of Michigan. Tight end Zack Marshall has the furthest distance to Michigan, traveling 2,342 miles from Carlsbad, California. Kicker Adam Samaha has the shortest drive, having to go just 4.6 miles from Ann Arbor Huron High School to play for his new squad.
3,959 – French import EDGE Aymeric Koumba will have the longest journey to Ann Arbor, traveling nearly 4,000 miles to play football in the United States.
