ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan Wolverines football redshirt junior defensive end Taylor Upshaw, sixth-year senior tight end Joel Honigford and third-year sophomore safety R.J. Moten met with the media to discuss the Maize and Blue’s spring practices Tuesday afternoon.

Upshaw is in a unique position. While he’s entering his fifth season in the program, he hasn’t fully had a chance to show all of his skills. He’s been behind star players like Aidan Hutchinson, David Ojabo and Kwity Paye on the depth chart at Michigan, and he’s also battled injuries, including one that forced him to miss time during the middle of the 2021 campaign. Upshaw came back for another year and said he’s stepped into more of a leadership role. He also wants to prove he’s one of the very best players in the country, citing his versatility — he says he can play the three-tech all the way out to being a wide edge rusher — and skillset as reasons why he can become that.

Honigford broke down the Michigan offense, which returns most of its production from last season. He said while the group is loaded and stocked full of talent, each player is unselfish and nobody is demanding touches. Honigford also decided to return for another year, and one of the reasons why was to close the gap between the Wolverines’ Big Ten title-winning season and winning a national championship. He enjoyed the challenge of helping turn around the team’s fortunes last season and wants to see it through this year as they attempt to win the program’s first national title since 1997.

Moten is expected to take a huge leap in 2022, after Daxton Hill and Brad Hawkins left the Michigan program. Moten started games last season but was in a secondary role to the aforementioned pair. Now, he’s taking on more responsibility, becoming more of a leader and will be asked to produce at a higher level. He’s excited for the fall and to prove he’s up for the challenge.
