There’s much anticipation heading into the Michigan Wolverines football season, and TheWolverine.com is counting down the days until the Sept. 3 opener against Colorado State. We’ll discuss current Michigan events, the upcoming season and/or take a look at a significant number that correlates with how many days remain until kickoff, whether it be a player’s jersey number, a year, a date, a score, etc.

There have been some great Michigan Wolverines to wear the No. 10 — Todd Collins, Devin Bush, Jeremy Gallon — but none are more legendary than Tom Brady, a seven-time Super Bowl champion who played for U-M from 1995-99.

Brady was Michigan’s starter for two seasons, opening 25 games in 1998 and 1999, and completed 61.9 of his passes for 4,773 yards in his career. He went 20-5 as the starting signal-caller, beat Ohio State in 1999 and led the Wolverines to a thrilling overtime victory over Alabama to cap off that same season. Brady was also a part of the Wolverines’ 1997 national championship team and won two Big Ten titles.

He often credits his days at Michigan and the high level of competition within the quarterback room for his mindset that has allowed him to be extremely successful in the pros. He also pays homage to legendary former Michigan equipment manager Jon Falk when asked which one of his many rings is his favorite — “the next one,” Brady, quoting Falk, answers.

Brady played 20 years with the New England Patriots, winning six Super Bowls with the franchise that drafted him in the sixth round, before making the move to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020. His first season with his new organization, he won another Lombardi Trophy. Brady retired after the 2021 campaign and a divisional round exit, but he returned 40 days later.

“Year round, it was very for me important to compete against myself to see how good I could be, and I learned a lot of those lessons at Michigan,” Brady said in 2020. “Michigan was a great training ground for me because nothing was gifted. You had to go out there and earn it. You had to earn the respect of your teammates and your coaches.

“For me, that’s what I had to do in order to play in college. I didn’t expect much difference when I went to the pros. Then I got my opportunity and always felt like when I got my opportunity I was never going to look back. I still haven’t really looked back that much, even 20-plus years later.”

Brady is widely regarded as the greatest football player of all time and one of the best athletes in history.
