Newsstand: Two Michigan players have hit transfer portal since Jim Harbaugh's departure
Tweets Of The Day
Michigan players have through Feb. 23 to enter their names into the NCAA transfer portal, since head coach Jim Harbaugh departed for the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers 30 days prior to that date. The Maize and Blue have seen two leave since Harbaugh’s departure: Reserve defensive tackle Reece Atteberry and junior safety Keon Sabb. Sabb entered Friday morning, a significant loss for Michigan.
Sabb — who played a significant role in 2023, helping the Wolverines go 15-0 and win their 12th-ever national championship — has three seasons of eligibility remaining. He redshirted as a freshman in 2022, appearing in four games, and saw time in 14 outings with five starts in 2023. His 360 defensive snaps ranked 14th on the Michigan defense.
Sabb didn’t just see his head coach leave the program. His position coach, Jay Harbaugh (Seattle Seahawks) and co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach Steve Clinkscale (Chargers) also left for the NFL. Additionally, both full-time starting safeties from last season — graduate Makari Paige and junior Rod Moore — decided against leaving for the pros, returning to Michigan for another year.
In 2023, the 6-foot-1, 208-pounder totaled 28 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 2 interceptions and 6 pass breakups. He started three of the first four games of the season due to injuries to both Paige and Moore. His first career pass breakup came in the opener against East Carolina, before making his first tackle for loss two weeks later against Bowling Green. He returned first collegiate interception for a touchdown in a win over Minnesota Oct. 7 and followed it up with another pick versus Indiana the following week.

Sherrone Moore moved quickly on hiring a new Michigan defensive backs coach, less than a week following the departure of Steve Clinkscale to the Chargers. Houston Texans safeties coach Stephen Adegoke had accepted the job Wednesday before backing off his pledge in favor of staying in the NFL Thursday. The next morning, Friday, Moore found his man in Louisiana defensive coordinator LaMar Morgan. Morgan worked with former U-M D.C. Jesse Minter at Vanderbilt in 2021 and comes highly recommended.
Michigan softball has now won five games in a row, beating Maine 11-0 and Seton Hall 3-0 both on Friday. The Wolverines are back in action today, Saturday, at 11:15 a.m. against Louisville, also in Boca Raton, Fla.
Quote Of The Day
“College football now has a structure that is unrecognizable to millions of guys that played it and coached it over the decades. The era so many of us former players enjoyed was about loyalty to Michigan, THE TEAM, and coaches that gave us the chance.
Former Michigan All-Big Ten offensive lineman Doug Skene
