Michigan Football: Updated ESPN FPI Outlook Released After Week 9
Michigan Football’s 37-33 loss to Michigan State on Saturday was a bitter pill to swallow. What is most important is what happens next. The computers give us an idea of the road ahead.
ESPN updated its Football Power Index (FPI) following the completion of Saturday’s games. FPI projects a 9.8-2.3 record for the Wolverines and a positive chance to win each of its remaining games except for one. FPI ranks Michigan fifth in the country, giving them an 8.4% chance of winning the Big Ten and a 14.2% chance of winning out.
Here’s a closer look at what FPI is saying about the road so far and Michigan’s remaining outlook heading into Week 10.

Nov. 6 vs. Indiana, 92.2% chance of victory
Indiana sits at 2-6 and has come crashing down to earth this season. Saturday’s primetime tilt will give Michigan a soft place to land after the loss in East Lansing. The Wolverines are out for revenge after losing 38-21 in Bloomington last season.

Nov. 13 at No. 20 Penn State, 57.2% chance of victory
Penn State gave Ohio State everything it could handle on Saturday but ultimately dropped its third consecutive game. Quarterback Sean Clifford is back in the lineup and the Wolverines will have a dogfight on their hands.
Nov. 20 at Maryland, 87.7% chance of victory
Maryland got back in the win column with a victory over Indiana this weekend. However, Michigan’s projected chance of victory went up after this weekend’s games. A trap game could be in the works a week ahead of the OSU contest, but a focused group takes care of business here.
Nov. 27 vs. No. 5 Ohio State, 36.4% chance of victory
Ohio State is back to looking like the national powerhouse it typically is with arguably the most prolific offense in college football. The chances of winning this game have gone down on FPI each week over the last several. This Buckeye team could be ripe for an upset, but Michigan has a lot of growing up to do before Nov. 27.
