WATCH: On3's Charles Power on why Alex Orji can be successful, Jadyn Davis/Carter Smith comparisons, more
The Michigan Wolverines head into the 2024 season with questions at the quarterback position with a handful of options, headlined by junior Alex Orji. Orji brings a different look to the position, but one that might fit in terms of the group’s identity.
The Wolverine was joined by On3’s Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power, who discussed why he thinks Orji has the tools to be exactly what Michigan needs this season. Also discussed was the evaluations of 2024 signee Jadyn Davis, 2025 commit Carter Smith and some of his favorite signees from the 2024 class on both sides of the ball.
“I think when you look at [Orji] as a quarterback, if you have an offense really tailored to his strengths, I think he’s a potential X factor,” Power said on Thursday’s show. “Watching him continue to improve as a senior at Sachse in Texas, I think that was very encouraging. And that was part of why we went with him as a four-star along with just the physical ability.
“When you look at how he potentially fits into Michigan’s offense and the way the team is constructed, how he compliments their personnel packages, how he compliments Donovan Edwards in the backfield, and then just the favorable box numbers he can dictate, his skill set kind of makes him a little bit different than the rest of the guys in the room.

“Going back and watching him in high school and then kind of seeing what he was able to do this year, I think he fits the kind of ball that Michigan wants to play and really how their roster is constructed. Right now, they’re kind of a line of scrimmage, heavy personnel type of roster with their tight end room and how they can run the ball. They continue to add skill pieces and receivers. That looks to kind of be a point of emphasis for Michigan on the recruiting trail. But I think when you look at this team in 2024, I think Orji’s skill set really matches up well with, with what they need.”
