For some reason, a potential opening with the Michigan football program has been linked to LSU head coach Brian Kelly if Jim Harbaugh decides to go to the NFL. Most have identified this as either wishful thinking or an agent playing for a raise from Kelly’s camp.

On3’s Jesse Simonton discussed the rumor with Andy Staples, who said it would be easier, and likely better for Michigan if it just promoted offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Sherrone Moore.

“I was on SEC Mike’s show late last week and he kind of asked me, or he kind of posited this whole situation where he thought that the domino effects of Michigan and could LSU unravel if Michigan ends up going to Brian Kelly,” Simonton said. “I said the fastest, simplest solution for the Wolverines is to maintain their roster and kind of continue that continuity, and that’s to promote Sherrone Moore. It’s sitting right there.

“I mean, Sherrone Moore already proved himself as a solid candidate and/or replacement late last season. I think he has as many top-10 wins as James Franklin does during his entire tenure at Penn State in one year. So I would promote the man, and I would keep as much continuity as possible. If Harbaugh leaves, you’re probably going to lose Jesse Minter with him to the NFL. I would absolutely green light Sherrone Moore as Michigan’s next head coach.”

Harbaugh is interviewing a second time this week with both the Los Angeles Chargers and Atlanta Falcons. Odds from DraftKings Sportsbook have the Chargers as a -380 favorite to land Harbaugh with a return to Michigan set at +175.

Michigan quote of the day

“Outstanding character. He’s a great person to have in the room. He’s fundamentally strong. The biggest thing I’ve taken, and that coach [Jim] Harbaugh has taken, is that he’s extremely coachable. You tell him a coaching point, he’s able to execute and go out there and apply it. I just think he has an extremely bright future. He just needs to know it’s a long process. Success early is not always something that happens, so you just need to stick with it.”
