Michigan forward Sam Walters entering NCAA transfer portal

Michigan Wolverines basketball wing Sam Walters is entering the NCAA transfer portal, according to Sam Kayser of League Ready on X. Walters will have two seasons of eligibility remaining at his next destination.
Walters played in 23 games this season at Michigan, averaging 5.0 points, 1.6 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game in 12.7 minutes. Known as a sniper with length, Walters hit 36.6% of his shots from distance this season. He missed the final month and a half while dealing with a back injury and last played on Feb. 8 at Indiana. Walters scored a season-high 13 points twice this season in wins over Tarleton State and Western Kentucky in non-conference play.
“The biggest part (where) Sam can impact the game is shooting the basketball,” May said at Big Ten media days in October. “He’s got unlimited range. When he walks into the gym, he’s in range. He gets it off quick, and he is confident. If he can see the rim, he’s letting it fly.”

The 6-10, 200-pound wing did not travel with the team for its final three weekends of the season in Indianapolis at the Big Ten Tournament and Denver and Atlanta in the NCAA Tournament. He is the third Michigan player to enter the transfer portal since it opened, along with freshman guard Justin Pippen and graduate guard Jace Howard.
Walters joined the program last offseason after one year at Alabama. The Michigan target was a four-star recruit and the nation’s No. 69 overall prospect in the 2023 class. He attended The Villages (Fla.) Charter School, which is located northwest of Orlando.
