An updated look at Michigan's FPI ranking, DraftKings' national title odds
Michigan football found its way into the College Football Playoff last season thanks to a 12-2 season and Big Ten Championship. The Wolverines fell short in the CFP’s Orange Bowl semifinal to Georgia, who ultimately went on to win it all.
The offseason continues to roll along and the spring football sessions are complete for Michigan. Others across the Big Ten and country are finishing theirs up currently. That makes it as good a time as ever to revisit expectations heading into the dog days of the preseason.
ESPN updated its Football Power Index (FPI) recently and ranked Michigan seventh in the country. The six teams ahead of them are Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, Clemson, Notre Dame and Texas. The top ten is rounded out with the Wolverines, Oklahoma, Pittsburgh and Auburn.
FPI projects a record of 9.5-2.6 for the Wolverines and gives them a 1.2% chance of going undefeated. Despite a 42-27 win over Ohio State last season and Big Ten title under its belt, ESPN gives the Wolverines only a 9.9% chance to win the Big Ten East. They have a 7.2% shot to win the Big Ten and 14.8% chance to make the College Football Playoff.
ESPN projects a bounceback year for Ohio State, giving them a 32.5% chance of going undefeated and a 79.7% chance of winning the Big Ten East. The Buckeyes are being given an 82.3% chance to make the playoff, which leads all teams in the FPI rankings.

It will get another crack at the Ohio State Buckeyes on Nov. 26 from Columbus in hopes to get to Indianapolis for a second-straight season.
