Michigan HC Sherrone Moore visits five-star QB Ryder Lyons

Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore made a swing through California today and saw five-star 2026 Folsom (Calif.) High quarterback Ryder Lyons.
Moore was joined by new offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey, general manager Sean Magee and tight ends coach Steve Casula. Lindsey stopped by Folsom earlier in the month and watched Lyons throw at a workout.
Moore and Lindsey are still resetting the quarterback board for this cycle, but it’s clear Lyons, the No. 3 quarterback and No. 10 overall prospect nationally, is at the top of the wish list.
Lyons has yet to visit Michigan. However, the Wolverines are working hard to get him on campus later this offseason.
A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Lyons is planning on taking a mission upon graduation, technically making him a 2027 recruit. That gives Michigan enough separation between Lyons and five-star freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood.
While Underwood is a big-framed quarterback, Lyons more closely resembles former Michigan quarterback JJ McCarthy. At 6-foot-2, 205 pounds, Lyons has a similar build and athleticism.
“Michigan had JJ McCarthy, who did some great things there,” said Lyons’ private quarterback trainer, Danny Hernandez. “You look at a guy like Ryder, and you say ‘this is a guy that’s a threat in all aspects of the game.’ He can beat you with his legs and arm. He’ll run you over if he has to. He’s Mr. Do-It-All.”

Lyons was named California’s Gatorade Player of the Year as a junior last season. He passed for 3,011 yards and 46 touchdowns with just six interceptions. He added 585 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground.
Overall, Lyons has an argument as the best signal-caller in the class and would be a massive land for the Wolverines.
“Ryder is amazing,” Hernandez said. “You look at him, and he could easily be a future Heisman winner. He checks all the boxes a coach and fanbase could want. He’s the face of the program kind of guy. He had a phenomenal year this year. I expect him to do the same this season. He’ll have some tough choices to make because pretty much everyone I talk to has him No. 1 on their board.”
USC, where his brother, Walker, plays tight end, has the heavy lead on the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine with a 97.8 percent chance of landing him.
Michigan currently holds two commitments in its 2026 recruiting class — On300 Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin cornerback Brody Jennings and three-star Dallas (Texas) Parish Episcopal wide receiver Jaylen Pile.
