Michigan in contact with Maryland transfer guard Rodney Rice

The Michigan Wolverines have contacted former Maryland guard Rodney Rice through the NCAA transfer portal, per Sam Kayser on X. The star guard entered the portal on Monday after the departure of head coach Kevin Willard to Villanova.
Schools in the mix include Indiana, Washington, Miami, DePaul, Virginia, Stanford, UConn, Ole Miss, Villanova, NC State, Kansas State, USC, Providence, Oklahoma, Michigan, Ohio State, Louisville, Kansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Texas Tech, BYU and Gonzaga. He is not yet rated on the On3 transfer portal rankings, but he will be one of the more sought-after players in the class.
Rice has two years of eligibility after spending two seasons at Virginia Tech and one at Maryland this past season. He was a key part of helping the Terrapins to their first Sweet Sixteen appearance in a decade. He averaged 13.8 points per game with 2.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists each night out, starting 32 of 36 games for Maryland. He shot 43.4% from the floor and 37.4% from three on good volume, making 80-of-214 attempts from distance.
Rice played in eight games off the bench at Virginia Tech in 2022-23, averaging 7.4 points per game, but missed most of the year dealing with hand and ankle injuries. He opted out of the 2023-24 season before entering the portal. Rice’s highlights this year include a 28-point performance in a win over Mount St. Mary’s on Nov. 8, 23 points and the game-winning triple in a win over Indiana on Jan. 26 and 26 points and 7 triples in a blowout win over Illinois in the Big Ten Tournament.

Michigan has been active in the portal recruiting the entire roster, headlined by the addition of former North Carolina point guard Elliot Cadeau on Monday afternoon. It has several other needs, namely in the frontcourt, as it is likely to lose both Danny Wolf and Vladislav Goldin this offseason.
The Wolverines have lost a trio of players to the portal thus far in freshman guard Justin Pippen, sophomore wing Sam Walters and graduate guard/forward Jace Howard, who is seeking a medical redshirt and sixth season of eligibility. More movement could come over the next several weeks with the portal open through April 22.
