Michigan just scored one of its biggest recruiting wins of the cycle.

On300 Chesapeake (Va.) Oscar Smith wide receiver Travis Johnson gave the Wolverines a verbal commitment on Friday afternoon.

“Michigan is a winning program,” Johnson said. “They have a great academic program. They have great people. Coach (Sherrone) Moore and Coach (Ron) Bellamy are both great. I’ve always liked Michigan.”

Johnson picked Michigan over fellow finalists North Carolina, Penn State, Indiana, South Carolina and Virginia Tech.

Michigan wide receivers coach Ron Bellamy led the way in Johnson’s recruitment and was able to seal the deal.

“My relationship with Coach Bellamy is really good,” Johnson said. “He’s a great and genuine guy. Every time we do talk, it’s a great conversation.”

Michigan pressed hard for Johnson and sold him on the idea of making an immediate impact in an offense set to be more balanced under new offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey.

“It looks like there are way more passing plays now with Coach Lindsey” Johnson said. “Of course, Bryce was playing great. The receivers were making plays. You know they are always going to have the run and a good offensive line. Now, they are opening up the pass game. It’s very fun to watch.

“Coach Lindsey is bringing a little bit of what he did at UNC. They had a great running back over there, Omarion Hampton. But they still passed the ball. It’s like a pro-style offense.”

At 6-foot-3, 180 pounds, Johnson is ranked as the No. 23 wide receiver and No. 161 overall prospect nationally, per the On3 Industry Ranking.

Michigan now has 21 commits in its 2026 recruiting class — Johnson, five-star Washington (D.C.)
