It didn’t take long for Cole Cabana to make his college decision.

The three-star Dexter (Mich.) High running back visited Michigan a couple of weeks ago and left campus with an offer in hand. On Saturday afternoon, Cabana shut down his recruitment and committed to the Wolverines.

“It was a pretty big deal around here,” Cabana said after receiving his U-M offer. “Everybody is a Michigan fan, for the most part. I’ve been up there a couple of times. I’m close with Mike Hart. It was definitely great to get an offer on the visit.”

Cabana picked Michigan over offers from Cincinnati, Louisville, Michigan State, Pitt, Purdue, Syracuse, West Virginia and others.

Michigan State was considered the early leader for Cabana. In fact, Cabana grew up a fan of the Spartans. However, he did not let that play a big role in his decision.

“I grew up a State fan,” Cabana said. “Once recruiting started, I had to drop that and focus on what’s best for me.”

Michigan running backs coach Mike Hart did a fantastic job of winning over Cabana from his childhood favorite. And the two have built up a strong relationship.

“One of the things that sticks out right away is he’s really straightforward,” Cabana said. “He wouldn’t lie to you. He seems like a good coach. All the running backs had great years this season.”

Cabana added that he was impressed with Michigan’s running back room this season in Hart’s first year with the program.

“They had a great season,” he said. “I’m pretty sure all three of the running backs will end up in the league. That does stand out to me, especially with me being a running back.”

At 5-foot-11, 170 pounds, Cabana, who recently clocked a 4.34 40, is ranked as the No. 32 running back and No. 436 overall prospect nationally, per the On3 Consensus.

Cabana is the fifth commit in Michigan’s 2023 recruiting class, joining Top 100 linebacker Raylen Wilson, On300 tight end Andrew Rappleyea, in-state wide receiver Semaj Morgan and in-state kicker Adam Samaha.
