Michigan lands commitment from Top 100 QB Brady Smigiel

Michigan has found its quarterback in the 2026 recruiting class.
Top 100 Newberry Park (Calif.) High quarterback Brady Smigiel committed to Michigan this weekend over fellow finalist South Carolina.
Smigiel recently visited Michigan for the annual spring game and felt at home.
“The brand,” Smigiel told On3. “Largest living alumni association in world. The mystique of Michigan. The education.”
Michigan’s quarterback race came down to three-star signal-caller Nathan Bernhard and Smigiel. At the end of the day, the Wolverines pushed for Smigiel and earned his verbal pledge.
While Bernhard has more upside, Smigiel provides a high floor. He’s older for his grade, has a high football IQ, is accurate short-intermediate and knows how to command an offense. He can prove to be a valuable depth piece behind former five-star prospect Bryce Underwood in U-M’s quarterback room.
Smigiel notched an offer from Michigan last year and appeared to be on the verge of committing. However, Michigan took a verbal pledge from Brady Hart, who has since reclassified and is now enrolled at Texas A&M.
Smigiel committed to Florida State soon after the Wolverines took Hart. However, he reopened his recruitment in January.
Washington emerged as the favorite for Smigiel going into the spring. However, the Huskies went in a different direction at the position. UCLA was a contender as well but added a young transfer. The door opened for Michigan to win him, and new offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey was able to seal the deal soon after his visit.

At 6-foot-4, 215 pounds, Smigiel is ranked as the No. 9 quarterback and No. 92 overall recruit nationally, per the On3 Industry Ranking. He is also ranked as the No. 14 overall prospect in the state of California this cycle.
Smigiel threw for 3,521 yards and 49 touchdowns with just three interceptions as a junior last season. He also ran for over 400 yards and 11 more scores. Across three seasons, Smigiel has already thrown for over 11,000 yards and 147 touchdowns.
Smigiel currently has an On3 NIL Valuation of $450K. The On3 NIL Valuation is the industry’s leading index that sets high school and college athletes’ projected annual value (PAV). The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date. It rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time.
Michigan now has four commits in its 2026 recruiting class — Smigiel, On300 Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin cornerback Brody Jennings, three-star Cartersville (Ga.) Cass offensive lineman Bear McWhorter and three-star Dallas (Texas) Parish Episcopal wide receiver Jaylen Pile.
