Michigan lands transfer portal commitment from UCLA long snapper Trent Middleton
Michigan has scored an important win out of the transfer portal.
UCLA long snapper Trent Middleton announce his commitment to U-M on social media on Thursday afternoon.
Middleton spent two years at UCLA and will have three years of eligibility remaining. He did not see game action this season.
A former recruit in the 2023 recruiting class out of Orange Lutheran in California, Middleton committed to UCLA as a preferred walk-on. He also held a scholarship from UNLV.
Middleton was graded as a five-star prospect by Kohl’s Kicking and was ranked as the No. 7 long snapper nationally.
Here is what Kohl’s Kicking Director Jamie Kohl said about him as a recruit:
“Middleton attended the Kohl’s California Showcase and displayed he has everything it takes to play and start at the Power 5 level. He has tremendous size and ability which will allow him to play in a pro style or shield punt scheme. Middleton finished off the camp with the highest overall score in the country for the 2023 class. He scored on all of his long snaps with an average snap time of .68 seconds. Middleton is the complete package and one of the best all around high school snappers I have had the pleasure of working with.”

Michigan special teams coordinator JB Brown led the way in Middleton’s recruitment. Brown has also been searching for an elite long snapper at the high school level and is monitoring prospects like Washington commit Hunter Sowold, an Under Armour All-American.
Michigan may also look to add a punter out of the transfer portal following the departure of starter Tommy Doman. Doman, who signed with Flordia, appeared in 31 games during his time in Ann Arbor. He was a third team All-Big Ten selection in 2023 and set a program record with five punts of 50 yards or longer against USC this season.
Michigan has landed 11 players out of the transfer portal — Middleton, quarterback Mikey Keene (Fresno State), running back Justice Haynes (Alabama), linebacker Troy Bowles (Georgia), wide receiver Donaven McCulley (Indiana), offensive lineman Lawrence Hattar (Ferris State), offensive lineman Brady Norton (Cal Poly), cornerback Tevis Metcalf (Arkansas), safety TJ Metcalf (Arkansas), defensive lineman Tre Williams (Clemson) and defensive tackle Damon Payne Jr. (Alabama).
Michigan has the No. 1 ranked transfer portal class in the Big Ten and No. 5 nationally, per the On3 Team Transfer Portal Index. The Wolverines currently sit behind Miami, Missouri, Ole Miss and Texas Tech.
