Michigan LB Deuce Spurlock enters NCAA transfer portal
Michigan Wolverines football freshman linebacker Deuce Spurlock has entered the NCAA transfer portal, a source informed TheWolverine.com. Spurlock did so less than 48 hours after the Wolverines fell 51-45 to TCU in the Fiesta Bowl and ended their season with a 13-1 record.
The Michigan defender redshirted this season and has four more years of eligibility remaining.
Spurlock sent a farewell message to Michigan on social media.
“My parents and I sat down recently to discuss my future endeavors as a student athlete,” Spurlock wrote. “After much prayer and discussion, I have decided to enter my name into the transfer portal.
“Special thanks to [Michigan head] Coach [Jim] Harbaugh, [defensive coordinator] Coach [Jesse] Minter and his defensive staff for their support. I’d like to express my sincere appreciation for th outstanding administration and training staff.
“Thanks, Wolverine nation! The bonds I have made will last a lifetime. Go Blue has a special place in my heart.”
Spurlock appeared in two games during his freshman season in 2022 — versus Hawai’i and UConn. He was credited with 3 tackles in his debut against the Rainbow Warriors and did not record any stats the following week versus the Huskies.

Spurlock was named Michigan’s defensive scout team player of the week during the lead up to the first game of the season vs. Colorado State and shared defensive freshman of the game honors following his performance against Hawai’i.
Harbaugh said early in Michigan’s 2022 fall camp that Spurlock and classmate Jimmy Rolder were impressing at the linebacker spot.
“Really good freshmen group,” Harbaugh said. “Jimmy Rolder and Deuce Spurlock have already popped through four practices.”
Michigan brought in former Nebraska linebacker Ernest Hausmann through the portal in December. The Wolverines also have junior-to-be Junior Colson as a returning starter. Rolder received more playing time than Spurlock this season, and classmate Micah Pollard burned his redshirt, primarily seeing time on special teams. There’s also a chance graduate Michael Barrett will return for a sixth season with the Wolverines.
