Michigan legend Chris Webber breaks into NFT space, set to commemorate Fab Five
Michigan legend and NBA Hall of Famer Chris Webber has partnered with blockchain technology company Coinllectibles to be the face of their latest NFT endeavor.
NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, can simply be looked at as various forms of digital content linked to what’s known as the blockchain, a digital database within a decentralized and publicly accessible network.
On Wednesday, Webber spoke with Business Insider about his entry into the world of NFTs and outlined his intentions to bring celebrities, fans and athletes of all ages together in the metaverse by utilizing the company’s Digital Ownership Token (DOT) technology.
The 49-year-old entrepreneur will now serve as president of Coinllectibles Sports, viewing his position as a pathway to also disrupting the rapidly evolving NIL market.
“What’s wonderful about the metaverse is your jump shot,” Webber told Insider during their Zoom interview. “Well, your jump shot never gets old in real life. But in the metaverse, it can bring athletes together, and we can respect all levels of their development, whether it’s a player that’s actively playing, whether it’s a great player like a Kareem (Abdul-Jabbar), one of the greatest of all times, or whether it’s a guy coming in off high school that we know is gonna be awesome.

“So, as an ex-athlete, as someone that still is a parent, someone that is still in this sporting world, I’m really happy that not only can I be in a situation that really does a lot and is disruptive in this market, but also know that we’re part of the change by definitely giving contracts at all levels.”
Webber admitted it was his love of art that drew him to take part in this project, as he avidly collects African-American art and artifacts from across the world. He understands the NFT space eliminates any worry of plagiarism or duplications and plans to parlay his passion with a focus on engagement to create a platform unlike any other.
“With sports, it’s so unique ’cause as a collector, not only do you want to collect, say, athletes’ shoes, but you love to have that experience,” Webber said. “Being an athlete myself, having had many experiences with fans across the country, I felt it was just a great place to come together and kinda change the way that the game is played – not only with NFTs, but kinda that interaction within the smart contract.”
Coinllectibles and the five-time NBA All-Star are expected to release a University of Michigan collection on March 28 that will commemorate Webber along with the Fab Five’s legacy.
