Michigan football: Early national title odds, J.J. McCarthy Heisman Trophy chances for 2024
The last two teams standing, Michigan Wolverines football and Washington, will meet Monday night in the national title game. The Maize and Blue will have a shot to get back to this spot and lift the trophy in 2024, too, according to Las Vegas oddsmakers.
Fan Duel Sportsbook released its early odds for the 2024 national championship, and Michigan checks in with the fifth-best chance at +1000, behind Georgia (+400), Alabama (+550), Ohio State (+700) and Texas Longhorns (+850).
Oregon (+1200), LSU (+1500), Ole Miss (+1500), Florida State (+2500) and Notre Dame (+2500) are behind the Maize and Blue.
The Wolverines are 14-0 with a chance to end the year undefeated as national champions and have won 39 of their last 42 games dating back to 2021. That puts them squarely in the mix again in 2024, but it’s early and there are still plenty of decisions that need to be made before that season kicks off in September.
Michigan junior quarterback J.J. McCarthy, senior wide receiver Roman Wilson, junior running back Donovan Edwards, junior linebacker Junior Colson and junior safety Rod Moore are among the numerous players that will decide between returning for another season in Ann Arbor or heading to the NFL.

McCarthy’s decision is the most high-profile, due to his position and the fact that he finished 10th in Heisman Trophy voting this season, a first-team All-Big Ten honoree.
McCarthy has the fifth-best odds to win the Heisman next season, according to Fan Duel Sportsbook, at +1000. The only other players ahead of him are four other signal-callers — Texas’ Quinn Ewers (+750), Alabama’s Jalen Milroe (+750), Georgia’s Carson Beck (+750) and Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel (+1000).
McCarthy has completed 230 of his 314 pass attempts for 2,851 yards and 22 touchdowns with 4 interceptions. He’s only thrown 1 pick since the start of Big Ten play in late September.
Michigan hasn’t won a national championship since 1997 but has the chance to win its 12th-ever Monday night and the opportunity to defend that next season. The Wolverines haven’t had a Heisman winner since ’97, either, defensive back Charles Woodson, but McCarthy can become that if he returns in 2024.
