The hosts discussed what a Martindale hire would entail.

“We were talking before we hit record here, the more I read about him and I’ve watched a couple press conferences as I’m doing some work, and he’s awesome,” Sayfie said. “He’s a football guy. Those of us who follow the NFL have known who he is for a long time. I never thought that he would potentially be a hire at Michigan — and again, it’s still a potential hire. But let’s talk about his candidacy.

“His interview going on today at some point here on Thursday. It’s a really interesting one, because Mike Macdonald was the linebackers coach under him; Jesse Minter was the secondary coach under Wink Martindale in Baltimore before they both branched out. In 2021, Jesse Minter goes to Vanderbilt, runs that defense, Mike Macdonald comes to Michigan. Minter then comes to Michigan for the last two seasons. And they were all running the same system, essentially. Obviously, different variations, they all have their own style as a play caller.

But he ran the Baltimore defense for four seasons, was let go after the 2021 campaign. That’s when Mike Macdonald headed back to Baltimore to run that defense. Him and John Harbaugh both kind of said it was time. They struggled a little bit. They had a lot of injuries that season. They were top three in the NFL in scoring defense his first three years as defensive coordinator. They slipped a bit in his last year there.”

Broome weighed in with thoughts.

“There are polarizing opinions on it,” Broome said. “There are a lot of people with a lot of opinions [on the internet]. But when you talk to football people, specifically people who covered Wink with the Ravens and with the Giants, I think a lot of people see that as a fit, especially given what Michigan has run the last few years.”
