“Michigan is confident,” Balas said. “And I love that they love to be the underdog here, right? And they feel like everybody is kind of overlooking them.
“Let’s not overlook the fact that this is an extremely talented team that probably underachieved a little bit throughout the year. Now they’re finding their stride, and when they got desperate, fellas, they went 6-1 down the stretch to get into the tournament, get a 3 seed, probably could’ve easily won the Big Ten Tournament had they gotten a better whistle. And instead, they go out and win the one that matters in the elite eight of hockey and to get to the Frozen Four and beat the Spartans, Michigan State, 5-2.
“In talking to them and listening to them speak, they are really relishing this role and really have an opportunity here, I wouldn’t say to shock the world, guys, but I do think that most people favor Boston College and for good reason. They’ve won 14 [games] in a row. These guys are playing great hockey, but they’re young. And you know what it reminds me of, the younger Michigan teams that got to the tournament. Last year, they were 15 and 16. Now, they’re freshmen and sophomores. You know what? This is going to be their first opportunity in the Frozen Four. Easily could’ve lost the last game. Michigan is talking about how their experience is really going to help them, and I think it will. Michigan has a great chance to win this game, and I think they feel that way.”
