“For Sherrone Moore, this would buy him a little bit more goodwill,” Balas said. “Everybody is going to continue to say, ‘Hey, these are Jim Harbaugh’s guys, let’s see what he does with his own guys,’ and that’s not unfair. We saw it with [former Michigan basketball head coach] Juwan Howard, right? In year three or four is when you can really kind of tell what your program is and who you are.
“But he’s learned from the best in Jim Harbaugh. It’s still surreal, too, that Jim Harbaugh’s not here on the sideline. And there was definitely a different feel for it. We all advocated for Sherrone Moore, and I’m glad he’s here and glad he’s gotten this opportunity.
“I’ve said this: I would feel better about this matchup if it were Jim Harbaugh on the sidelines, just because he’s one of the best coaches in the world, fellas. It has nothing to do with Sherrone Moore.
“To me, he’s got an opportunity here to really gain some momentum, some recruiting cred and everything else. To me, if it’s a close game and they lose at home, but if it’s well-played, what do you say? You tip your hat. The one thing you want to avoid is some really ugly game or a game in which you get blown out. I don’t anticipate that one happening.”
