Michigan point guard Frankie Collins hits the transfer portal
In a surprising move, Michigan freshman point guard Frankie Collins has entered his name into the transfer portal, he announced Saturday. Collins was considered a frontrunner to take over at point guard after DeVante’ Jones’ graduation — instead, he’ll likely be playing elsewhere next year.

Collins joins Zeb Jackson as a transfer out. Jackson, a sophomore, left before the 2021-22 season ended, having played sparingly early in the season. He ended up at Virginia Commonwealth with grad transfer Brandon Johns.
Collins averaged 2.8 points in 11.0 minutes per game, playing in 31 contests. The Nevada native shot 42.7 percent from the floor at Michigan this year, but only 16.7 percent from three-point range and 44.1 percent from the free throw line. He averaged 1.4 assists to 1.1 turnovers per game.
Michigan coach Juwan Howard and his staff have been looking to the portal to add guards, having hosted Texas Tech transfer Terrence Shannon Jr. recently. Shannon was expected to join the program if he got through admissions. However, he wound up at Illinois. Texas Tech was rumored to be working on keeping him, as well.

There had been talk Michigan could move a player to walk-on status to make room for a guard or wing. There’s now no need, unless they add another from the portal. That’s also a possibility, with Memphis transfer Emoni Bates and others still on the radar.
Michigan is also waiting on NBA decisions from Moussa Diabate and Caleb Houstan, as well. The two entered their names into the NBA Draft, but could still return after testing the waters.
