Michigan point guard Tre Donaldson hits the transfer portal

Michigan basketball added a guard from the transfer portal in North Carolina’s Elliot Cadeau yesterday, but lost one the other way today in Tre Donaldson. The junior put his name in to day after one year at Michigan.
Donaldson started every game for the Wolverines in 2024-25 and averaged 11.3 points, 4.1 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game. He shot 43.3 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from long range as one of the Wolverines’ top three-point shooters.
Donaldson was a hero in a few Michigan games this year, but none bigger than the Big Ten Tournament semifinal win over Maryland. He took an inbounds pass coast to coast for an 81-80 Wolverines win to set up a championship tilt with Wisconsin, which U-M won to capture a title.
But Donaldson had his ups and downs as Michigan’s starting point guard after playing at Auburn for two years, primarily as a backup. He struggled mightily in both losses to Michigan State, and he played one of his worst games of the year in a loss to his former team in the Sweet 16. He scored 5 points but had no assists and turned it over 4 times in a loss to the Tigers, going 2-for-9 in 30 minutes.

“From my understanding, he’s very appreciative of his Auburn experience … it’s got him to where he is now as a person,” May said of Donaldson before Michigan faces the Tigers. “He’s never been negative at all about Bruce Pearl or his teammates or anyone. I think it’s just he needed a change, and that’s not always unhealthy.
“I said that the other day that I was in the transfer portal last year, a lot of these players in the transfer portal, sometimes change is healthy at different stages of your life. He just needed a fresh start, and he’s found a place where he’s been embraced, and he’s had a bigger role. He’s certainly produced for us and made big shots and continued to grow. He’s getting better day by day, week by week.”
Though he could still technically return, it appears he’ll be doing it in another team’s uniform next year.
